Postgraduate Research Posters
Prizes and posters
Every year the faculty organises a full day of interactive competitions and workshops to celebrate and showcase the excellent work of its research students. Guest speakers from the Graduate School, the Faculty of Engineering and from industry (Prof Allan Jones, Head of R&D for E.On UK presented in 2012) provide an extra dimension to the morning’s sessions.
The showcase event starts a few weeks earlier with a research poster competition in each of the seven engineering research divisions. The top five entries from each division are then submitted to the faculty showcase event.
‘PhD madness’ is a dynamic and exciting part of the event with all poster finalists giving a strict, one minute presentation on their research to colleagues and staff who then vote for the best presentation.
After lunch students have the choice to attend a number of interactive workshops whilst academic members of staff judge the posters individually. Workshops include:
-
Effective researchers –the secrets; a panel of postdoctoral researchers give advice
-
Writing a thesis; common issues for students in the early stages of doctoral research
-
The viva; an examiners perspective - an opportunity to discuss viva questions with a panel of examiners
-
IP Clinic; how to protect Intellectual Property and the support available from the University
-
Meet the journal editors; tips on how to get research ready for publication from a panel of journal editors
-
A career in academia; preparing an effective academic CV and job application
-
Life after a PhD; practical advice on how to start planning for the future

Other successes
Last year the winning team of the East Midlands heat of Engineering Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (Engineering YES) were Nottingham engineers, The Apex team from the Efficient Fossil Energy Technologies Doctoral Training Centre (Orla Williams, Philip Jenkinson, Peter Beck, Navdeep Kahlon and Callum Hall). The team won the heat and the Peer Review prize.
Runner up and winner of the IET sponsored ‘Best elevator pitch’ prize was Nottingham team Cydex: Jose Salazar (science), Gabriel Choong (engineering), Bishan Meghani (engineering), Alpesh Thakker (medical and health sciences) and David Morou Besong (science).
Both teams attended the grand finale at Birmingham Science Park on 20 June 2012 and competed against the North West and West Midlands heat winners.
