Lecturer in International Security, Faculty of Social Sciences
Dr Bettina Renz obtained her MA and MSc in Russian Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She completed her PhD at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, University of Birmingham in 2005. She has previously lectured at King's College London at the Royal Air Force College and was an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Birmingham's European Research Institute before being appointed to a lectureship in International Security at the University of Nottingham in 2007.

Dr Renz is keen to take on PhD students who are interested in any area of Russian foreign, defence and security policy as well as contemporary strategy.

Dr Renz's teaching interests are in the broad themes of security studies with a particular emphasis on the former Soviet region. With a background in Russian studies her teaching centres on developments in contemporary Russia. Her PhD research into civil-military relations further focused her expertise on the politics of security and defence in Russia and in other former Soviet states. Her teaching is informed by research carried out into contemporary Russian security and defence policy involving regular research visits to Russia. Having taught defence studies at RAF Cranwell until her appointment at Nottingham in 2007 Dr Renz is also interested in strategic studies with a focus on the use of air power in contemporary wars and conflict. Dr Renz is a graduate of the King's Institute for Learning and Teaching and is a fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.

Dr Renz's main area of research is Russian security and defence policy. Specifically, she has researched civil-military relations, media-military relations, security sector reform, and the perception of security threats in contemporary Russia. Her book, Securitising Russia: The Domestic Politics of Putin (co-authored with Edwin Bacon) was published by Manchester University Press in 2006. Current research focuses on reforms of the security sector in contemporary Russia with a particular emphasis on institutions dealing with military operations other than war. Having lectured at King's College London at the Royal Air Force College from 2006-2007, she is also interested in the role of air power in modern conflict.
Dr Renz is a Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham.
