Instrumentation facilities, high performance computing and major equipment underpin Science, Medicine and Engineering research into the structure and properties of materials.

The Facilities Priority Group is an umbrella group, which seeks to:

Multidisciplinary research

The establishment of the Facilities Priority Group will enhance research and innovation opportunities by facilitating communication of expertise and facilities across the University. This will develop new multidisciplinary research partnerships across the University and beyond and will include:

  • holding a range of UNICAS meetings to facilitate new University collaborations
  • working with academics on instrumental research challenges, solutions and innovations leading to opportunities for collaborations with leading national and international groups and instrument manufacturers

External engagement

The Priority Group will serve as a base for engaging with external organisations and companies, leading to increased services rendered and industrial research income. This will:

  • create opportunities for networking and research partnerships with SMEs, industry and other funding bodies
  • contribute to the scholarly and economic wellbeing of the University

Research objectives

The Priority Group will develop strategies for the maintenance and development of world-leading facilities and ensure that existing facilities and equipment are utilised more effectively and efficiently.

It also aims to:

  • establish strategic links and joint activities with a wide range of other University Priority Groups
  • facilitate increased research grant submission and research income by drawing in key players/stakeholders and establishing new multidisciplinary research teams
  • coordinate and support large strategic equipment applications involving major University facilities and multidisciplinary research teams
  • facilitate knowledge transfer
