Nottingham City

Nottingham is located in the East Midlands in the heart of England. The city boasts a large and diverse student population that is integral to the city itself. In addition to its impressive history and famous legends, Nottingham is a culturally diverse and vibrant city ideally suited towards student life.

Visitors and city residents will find there is huge amount to do and see in and around Nottingham: history, culture, country parks, sport, shopping and dining, local eventsnights out.

The city's excellent transport links make it the ideal location from which to explore. Local, regional, national and international travel couldn't be easier from here. Furthermore, due to its variety of public transport and cycle routes, Nottingham has been named as the least car dependent city in the UK.

Travelling around the city

By bus

Nottingham City Transport run buses in and around the city, while other areas such as Beeston are serviced by Trent Barton Buses. Both companies offer good late-night transport alternatives.

By tram

Run by Nottingham Express Transit, the tram route currently runs from Nottingham Train Station through the city centre and out to Hucknall. The Government is proposing a new tram route running from the city to The University Park Campus, Beeston and Chilwell.  See the proposed tram route in PDF format. 

By bicycle

A 2010 poll by Cycling Plus magazine found Nottingham was Britain’s second best city for cycling. The city has an extensive network of cycle routes and cycle parking. Some great places to cycle are near the canals, parks and nature spots and the National Watersports Centre.

Research by the Campaign for Better Transport revealed Nottingham is the least car dependent city in the UK... A wide variety of public transport, low car use on school runs and the city's local transport plan all contributed to the top ranking.

Travelling abroad 

By road

Nottingham is situated near the M1 Motorway with access from junctions 24, 25 and 26. The M6 is also easy to get to from Nottingham and the A1, which runs from London to Edinburgh, passes through Nottinghamshire.

By rail

Frequent rail services run from Nottingham to major UK cities, including London every 30 minutes. The East Midlands Parkway Station is close to the Sutton Bonington Campus and often does deals on fares. Visit the National Rail Enquiries website for more information on trains, and book well in advance for the cheapest tickets.

By coach

National Express and Megabus run frequent connections to other UK cities to help get you abroad cheaply and easily. Tickets booked in advance can cost as little as £1.

By plane

There are flights to an exciting range of national and international destinations from East Midlands Airport, one of the UK’s fastest growing airports. A number of budget airlines run services from East Midlands, which is only 40 minutes from Nottingham city centre on the 24 hour Skylink bus service.
