League tables 2010/11 – Nottingham moves up

The University of Nottingham improved its rank in all four of the major UK league tables published in 2010/11, while maintaining its rank in the fourth.  A key reason for this improved performance was improved student satisfaction scores in the National Student Survey (NSS), with further contributions from improved graduate employment and continuation scores.  The actual ranks were as follows (previous year in brackets).

  • The Guardian  19 (21)
  • The Independent 18 (19)
  • The Sunday Times  15 (12)
  • The Times  16 (20)

Subject-level tables

The Sunday Times joined the other papers this year in publishing subject-level tables.

  • The Guardian ranked Nottingham in the top ten in nine tables (from a total of 46)
  • The Independent ranked Nottingham first in one (Pharmacy and Pharmacology) and in the top ten in a further 17 (from a total of 62)
  • The Times ranked Nottingham first in Agriculture and Forestry and in the top ten in a further 22 (from a total of 62)
  • The Sunday Times ranked Nottingham in the top ten in 10 tables (from a total of 39)

“League tables are an increasingly important feature of the higher education landscape and it is very pleasing to see a positive change in the rankings.  Everyone in the University has a part to play in maintaining and improving our position, something that is particularly true for the National Student Survey where every interaction between any member of staff and a student will help to influence the perception of the University.”

Professor Saul Tendler, lead Pro-Vice-Chancellor for league tables

A League Table Action Group, led by Professor Tendler, will continue to monitor league tables and seek to ensure that this year’s trend is sustained.
