Welcome from the Head of School

The University of Nottingham School of Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. It is a large School with 328 academic and support staff. The School operates from several sites in the East Midlands region covering over 3,000 urban and rural square miles providing pre-registration, post-registration and higher degree courses. Our vision is to to provide education and undertake research that is innovative, world-leading and makes a positive impact on the health and well being of individuals and populations.

The School is one of the leading centres of healthcare scholarship in the UK. The results of the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 confirm the School as one of leading institutions carrying out nursing and midwifery research in the UK. Almost all (90%) of the research carried out by academics in the School is of international significance, with over half (55%) of the research defined as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. Nottingham is established as one of the top 5 UK universities for nursing and midwifery research according to the research power method for ranking research in a subject area, which includes both the quality and depth of research activity. A strong and sustainable research culture supports high quality education for health professionals and this result places the School at the leading edge of research and teaching in the UK. Nottingham is the most popular place to study physiotherapy in the UK because of our reputation for providing education within a supportive and nurturing environment, which not only develops the individual, but produces first class physiotherapists.

The School recognises the diversity within the healthcare workforce. The delivery of healthcare is changing fast in response to policy changes, new health demands, and innovation in health technology and changing population needs. The School is committed to educating a flexible workforce with the intellectual and practical skills to adapt with speed and confidence to changes in healthcare. High quality scholarship is integral to this process.
