Research and Graduate Services (RGS)

RGS supports the development and delivery of the University's Research and Knowledge Transfer Strategy, and contributes expertise and guidance across the full spectrum of the University's research and doctoral training policies and activities.

RGS has five sections:

Research Policy and Development

This section coordinates the activities and initiatives of the Research and Knowledge Transfer Board including Priority Groups, and the development and implementation of research policies, including the coordination of the University's REF submission. Staff work with the academic community to win research grants and contracts, across most sponsor categories and to develop, maintain and implement policies and procedures which are in line with best practice for a leading research university. The section manages the University's relationship management with several major research sponsors including with Research Councils, EU and Charities.

Research Operations

This section is responsible for development and implementation of full economic costing and post award management of the University's research and related portfolio working closely with the academic community, School Managers and research administrators. The section also includes support for EU costing, project management and audit requirements. Staff have knowledge and expertise on the financial and regulatory requirements of sponsors and to ensure compliance with the University's financial regulations.

Research Contracts and Governance

This section provides the academic community and other professional services with contract advice and reviews all research and related contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with legislation, regulation and best practice. All research and research related contracts and agreements are reviewed by staff with appropriate legal expertise and qualifications. Within the section there is specific expertise on research governance to advise on clinical trial studies and all research and related activities that require ethical approval.

The Graduate School

The Graduate School contributes to the development of the University's postgraduate strategy through the Postgraduate Strategy Committee, and supports the development and implementation of bids for PhD studentships, in particular those funded by UK Research Councils. Graduate School staff support all postgraduates and early career research staff at The University of Nottingham by providing training and development opportunities, workshops, and events, and help with funding. Graduate Centres provide local dedicated social and study spaces. A programme of events is also provided for the supervisors of doctoral students.

Research Outcomes

A new section has been established to develop an integrated programme for supporting increased focus on research outcomes through targeted interventions at the development, project implementation and post project phases which can lead to the development of the highest quality impact case studies and other outcomes which will benefit the University. The section will also manage a portfolio of major research-driven projects including the development of equipment sharing within the University and more broadly the development and management of international research collaborations including with campuses in China and Malaysia.

Research and Graduate Services also provides an outreach service through The Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS)

Business Engagement and Innovation Services

Business Engagement and Innovation Services (BEIS) aims to deliver business engagement and knowledge transfer objectives set out in the University's Strategic Plan 2010-15 and contribute expertise and guidance across the full spectrum of the University's innovation activities.

BEIS consists of the following teams:

Graduate School

The Graduate School supports all postgraduates and early career researchers at The University of Nottingham with the following services:

  • a large range of training and other development opportunities
  • a programme of events to keep students and staff updated about relevant issues and opportunities
  • dedicated postgraduate social and study spaces across all University of Nottingham UK and overseas campuses
