2012 Green Flag Award winner - ten years running 

University Park Campus  is widely acknowledged for its stunning grounds and gardens and is regarded as one of the most attractive in the country.  The 330 acre site is one of the largest in the UK and has won many awards for its  landscaping and grounds management.

• In 2012 it won the Civic Trust Green Flag Award for parks and open spaces for the eighth year running
• Other recent awards include the Nottingham in Bloom Garden Competition  and the Royal Horticultural Society's 'Britain's' Best Flower Bed'

Numerous awards for green design

Opened in 1999, Jubilee Campus is built on a former industrial site and has become an award-winning campus for its environmentally-friendly nature.

In addition to its beautifully landscaped grounds, lakes and wealth of urban wildlife, it utilises a number of technologies that promote sustainability and houses award-winning architecture at the forefront sustainable design.

Research and learning

Learning to be green

We offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that address environmental issues across a number of disciplines, including architecture, business, engineering, geography, history and law. Please see the undergraduate and postgraduate prospectuses for further information.

Encouraging environmental awareness 

The University's Students' Union encourages students to become more ethically and environmentally aware in a variety of ways:

• Environment and Social Justice Committee ─ plans projects and events and offers support to a number of societies that advocate conservation, animal ethics and human rights
• Allot Soc ─ runs the allotment scheme on University Park
• Student Volunteer Centre ─ offers opportunities with a variety of ecological and conservation projects

Sustainable practices

Recycling

We are working to significantly reduce the amount of waste we produce and have several onsite recycling centres.  We have increased the number of on-street mixed recycling bins across our campuses and recycle a number of waste items, from cans, tins, paper, glass and plastic, to mobile phones, fluorescent tubes, computer hardware and ink cartridges.

Transport

The University actively encourages sustainable forms of transport. 

Bus services

We provide free Hopper Bus services between our three campuses and all campuses have excellent public transport connectivity. Further information about bus services around and to the University.

Cycling

The University is criss-crossed with cycle paths and has secure cycle parking on all campuses.  There are also good cycle path networks across the county. It also runs the following cycle schemes for students.

• Ucycle ─ the student bike hire scheme which also offers free cycling skills training
• Bike to Work ─ enables employees to hire a bike and equipment for a period of twelve months, after which he University may transfer ownership to the employee
