Exercises

Here you will find exercises based on concordance lines. If you are not familiar with studying concordance lines, look at the explanations in Concordances. The exercises focus on one word or word family from the AWL. Doing the exercises will help you get to know the words well.

Each worksheet is divided into two tasks. In Task One you are asked to work with a set of concordance lines. You can find the answers to the questions simply by observing and thinking. In Task Two you are asked to use the target word(s) in your own writing. This will strengthen your understanding and memory of the way in which these important academic words are used. Ask a teacher to check your writing for you.

Open the file and print the document before you begin studying. The exercises on factor and symbol are more straightforward than the others so it is a good idea to begin with one of them.
