Welcome to the home page of the Astronomy and Astrophysical Chemistry Group at The University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.

The Astronomy and Astrophysical Chemistry Group group is part of the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. Also involved in astronomical research at the university are the Astronomy Group in the School of Physics and Astronomy.

The Astronomy and Astrophysical Chemistry Group group is engaged in observational and laboratory spectroscopic-based research at the interface of astronomy, physics and chemistry. Current areas of interest cover ultraviolet, visible, infrared and radio studies of molecules and dust in interstellar, nebular, circumstellar and stellar media. The single largest project is research into the problem of the `diffuse interstellar absorption bands' which have remained unidentified since the first was discovered over 70 years ago, but the research has recently expanded to include carbon- and oxygen-rich stars, comets and molecules in external galaxies.

The University of Nottingham is a founding member of a consortium of UK institutions, who constitute one of the partners in the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) project. SALT is an 11 metre diameter telescope currently being built at the Sutherland Observatory, South Africa. Upon completion, the University will have its own guaranteed share of time on this world-leading research facility.

In the Summer of 2000 the Group participated in the PPARC residential course for the UK astronomy postgraduates of the year 2000/2001.

The Group hosted the Faraday Discussion 'Chemistry and Physics of Molecules and Grains in Space' which was held at The University of Nottingham, April 15-17 1998. The Discussion volume has been published. If your library subscribes then you should be able to access the text 'on-line'.

The A&APC Group is part of 'NAREF' - the Nottingham Astronomy Research Forum.
