Type location Yemen (Sima ambigua sous-esp. erythraea n. subsp., Emery, 1895h: 23, worker; in Tetraponera, Wheeler, 1922: 797; raised to species by Collingwood, 1985: 242) - see below
speculative subspecies occidentalis (Sima ambigua r. erythraea Em. v. occidentalis n. v., Stitz 1917: 336; Tetraponera ambigua var. occidentalis, Menozzi, 1934: 154, worker) from Algeria and Yemen (Aden) & North Africa - no images on Antweb (April 2015).
