Historical Archaeology @ Nottingham

Understanding our historic past through archaeology

Nottingham has a long tradition of working in the archaeology of historic periods and this continues today, with staff pursuing research projects across the Roman and Medieval periods, the latter encompassing also the Byzantine and Islamic Mediterranean. Although these are periods for which textual sources exist, coverage of many geographical areas and social groups is limited or wholly absent from documentary records. Archaeology thus has the opportunity to give a voice to “people without history”.
