The 2014 REF placed our department's submission 7th among the 19 solely Archaeology REF returns (8/27 if combined returns are also considered), according to the Times Higher's tables (2 Jan 2015) showing REF results by intensity-weighted GPA rank order. 96% of research in the department was judged as being of an international standard and 59% of research was 4* and 3* (including 90% of Impact and 75% of Research Environment). 4* equates to ‘world leading’ and 3* to ‘internationally excellent’.
The department submitted all eligible staff.
The REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (it replaced the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) last conducted in 2008).
The 2014 REF was conducted jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL).
