Zoology BSc and MSci Hons

The BSc and MSci Hons course in Zoology provides students with a comprehensive education in Zoology, with opportunities to learn the underlying principles, defining concepts, theories, methods, current knowledge and development of the subject. The curriculum is delivered by dedicated, motivated, research active staff, who provide up-to-date information in their respective disciplines. Teaching spans the breadth of the discipline, from modules in ecology and animal behaviour, through evolution, parasitology, immunology and physiology to the cellular and molecular levels. We aim to enable students to develop a confident, scientific approach to answering questions through theoretical analysis, formulation of hypotheses, practical experimentation, data analysis and communication of results. Modules in Year 1 cover the full spectrum of the subject, providing students with a thorough grounding that prepares them for more advanced teaching in Year 2, and the greater opportunities for specialisation in Year 3. Themes running throughout the course enable students to focus on medical/veterinary aspects of the subject, as well as behavioural/ecological directions. Additionally, students can take up to 20 credits of modules outside the subject and brush up on languages or merely explore another subject that they find fascinating. A range of teaching and assessment techniques are used and due emphasis is given to the development of generic transferable skills (IT, communication, teamwork, self-management, problem solving) for the employment market. There are excellent opportunities for field work in Year 2 and in Year 3 for focusing on a specific problem and investigating this in considerable detail (e.g. via laboratory research, surveys, field work, web based approaches). We run fieldcourses in the UK, Portugal and Malaysia. Zoologists can also take the opportunity to participate in one of our excellent study abroad programmes during their degree programme and students with a strong interest in research may opt to pursue a fourth year, through our MSci degree.
