DNA Sequencing

The DNA Sequencing Facilty based in the school of Biomedical Sciences has for over 20 years provided a fast, accurate and comprehensive DNA sequence analysis service.  The facility is used by numerous departments throughout the University.

To carry out analysis, we currently use a 3130xl ABI PRISM Genetic Analyzer.

It is capable of sequencing 16 individual samples at any one time.

We use the latest dye terminator chemistry (BigDye version 3.1) for high-sensitivity sequencing. However, we have other chemistries available if that’s what you require.

There are two ways you can submit your samples to us:

  1. Provide us with the template(s) and primer(s) and we will perform the reaction for you.
  2. Or, if you prefer, you can carry out the reaction(s) yourself and provide us with the dried pellet of DNA to run (in these circumstances we can provide you with aliquots of discounted BigDye and Sequencing buffer and help you plan your sequence reactions).

Sequences are run over night and next day turnaround happens regularly. We always aim to turn around samples as quickly as possible.

The results are sent by email. Each sample will have two files. The first will show the electropherogram, which can be viewed using a software programme such as Chromas. This is freely available to download. The second file can be opened in Microsoft Word and features the raw sequence in text format. If this file is empty or contains only Ns, the sample was unsuccessful.

For more information about the sequencing process, please refer to the FAQs .

If you would like to submit a request for DNA sequencing, please download the form , complete it and send it back to us.
