About the Division
The University of Nottingham's Division of Food Sciences is an International Centre for both fundamental and industrial Food, Microbiological and Biochemical teaching and research.
The University of Nottingham's Division of Food Sciences is an International Centre for both fundamental and industrial Food, Microbiological and Biochemical teaching and research.
The Division is housed at the University's Sutton Bonington campus in a purpose built building opened in 1997 close to separate buildings which house the Food Processing/Brewing Hall, a Sensory Sciences Suite and the School of Biosciences Library. A new building to house the Division's National Centre for Macromolecular Hydrodynamics (NCMH) was recently completed.
The Division comprises five research groups in Brewing Science, Food Flavour Technology, Food Structure, Microbiology & Food Safety and the NCMH. There are currently 18 academic staff members, 15 postdoctoral research workers and 75 postgraduate research students. Approximately 30 students are currently studying for BSc degrees in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Microbiology and Food Science and Nutrition, and 97 students studying for MSc degrees in Applied Biomolecular Technology (30), Brewing Science (23) and Food Production Management (44). Members of other divisions and schools also contribute to teaching, including lecturers in plant science, animal science, pharmacy, biochemistry, management science and immunology. The division also works very closely with the Food and Pharmaceutical industries with regards its courses and research and some courses involve an industrial placement.
Staff and students contribute towards a very friendly atmosphere condusive towards high academic achievement and fulfillment: the last three United Kingdom Universities Research Selectivity Exercises (1992, 1996 and 2001) the Division - as Food Science and formerly Applied Biochemistry and Food Science - has scored the highest (5*A, 5*A and 5A) rankings and was a major contributor to the School of Bioscience's "Excellent" Teaching Quality Assessment score.
