Expertise Summary

Soils are a key natural resource for nutrient cycling, food production and biodiversity. My research explores how perturbations can impact the functions that soils provide. A particular focus is on soil microbial communities and how these respond to change. Research is currently focussed on biochar application to agricultural soils to understand any potential benefits and impacts biochar may have on soil health and function. Biochar, is the product of pyrolysed organic material, and is a potential carbon capture and sequestration technology that might have benefits as a soil amendment.
