Professor MacCarthy is Professor of Operations Management at the University of Nottingham. Following his PhD at the University of Bradford, he undertook postdoctoral work at the Mathematics Institute at the University of Oxford. His research spans the analysis, modelling and management of supply chains and operational systems, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with particular interests in the impact of digital technologies.

His has led major research projects on Supply Chain Management, Decision Support in Planning and Scheduling, Order Fulfilment Modelling and Mass Customization. Sources of funding have included the research councils, European funding agencies and industry. He has researched and consulted with a range of companies in automotive, aerospace, engineering, textiles and clothing, consumer products, food, logistics and retail sectors. He has published widely in the Operations, Supply Chain, and Management Science literatures and delivered many keynote and plenary addresses on Supply Chain and Operations Management topics. He is Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Operations and Production Management and an Editorial Board member for the International Journal of Production Economics having been European Editor until February 2022. Currently he is European Vice-President and Board Member for the Decision Sciences Institute (2022-2024) with responsibilities for Europe.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and a member of other professional and learned organisations including POMS, EUROMA, ORS, and COPIOR, the UK's Committee of Professors of Operational Research. As well as the UK research councils, he has reviewed research and funding applications, promotions and appointments for Institutions in many countries.

He teaches at Executive, MBA and Masters levels in Operations, Supply Chain and Project Management. He developed Nottingham's Executive Masters program in Global Supply Chain Management with Rolls-Royce and has previously been Head of the Operations Management and Information Systems Department (OMIS) as well as Director of MBA programmes at Nottingham. He is Nottingham's representative on the Board of the Industrial Policy Research Centre (IPRC), located at Loughborough University.

I teach operations and supply chain management as well as management science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I lead the Executive MBA module in Operations Management and have contributed to the design and presentation of the Executive Masters in Global Supply Chain Management. I supervise dissertations and projects on Masters programmes in Operations and Supply Chain Management and on the General and Executive MBA programmes.

Professor MacCarthy’s research spans the analysis, modelling and management of contemporary supply chains and operational systems across a wide range of sectors, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

He has researched and consulted with a range of companies in automotive, aerospace, engineering, textiles and clothing, consumer products, food, logistics and retail sectors. He has led research projects on international supply chain management, supply chain and operations planning, and order fulfilment modelling, typically involving large industrial and business consortia. He has gained very significant external research funding over his career from the UK research councils, the European Union, and industry. He was Principal Investigator at Nottingham on the large EPSRC-funded multi-University research grant examining new perspectives on modelling robustness and resilience in international supply networks. He has previously conducted pioneering research with the Ford Motor company on Mass Customization and the operational and supply chain challenges of managing high levels of product variety.

His current research interests focus on the impact of digitalization, cloud technologies, blockchain and platforms on the design, configuration and management of contemporary and emerging supply chains. He was co-investigator on the EPSRC-funded project on Cloud Manufacturing, jointly with the Faculty of Engineering. Recently, he was the Principal Academic Investigator on the Industry-led project funded by INNOVATE UK on developing a ‘Blockchain-Enabled Digital Twin for Leather Traceability: From Farm to Vehicle’ in which Nottingham partnered with Jaguar Land Rover, Scottish Leather Group and Circulor. His current interests also include the impact of multi- and omni-channel retailing on supply systems and order fulfilment.

He has published widely in the Operations, Supply Chain, and Management Science literatures and delivered keynote addresses on a range of Supply Chain and Operations Management topics. With Dmitry Ivanov, he has edited the recent extensive and comprehensive book on ‘The Digital Supply Chain’, covering the technologies, systems and platforms supporting the digitalization and management of supply chains.
