David King awarded prize for research excellence

Dave-King-Dean-Moore-Prize

The School of Chemistry congratulates David King, a PhD student in the research group of Steve Liddle, who has been awarded a prestigious Dean Moore Scholarship by the University of Nottingham. This postgraduate prize award recognises David’s research on uranium-nitride triple bonds in order to better understand the chemical bonding and reactivity of uranium.

The Scholarship was Founded in 1949 by a bequest under the will of Mrs Florence Moore (née Dean) of Thorneywood, Nottingham, formerly a teacher at the Carlton Road School, Nottingham. The award is given to young scientists in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements. The panel chose David as a winner for his research work supervised by Dr Steve Liddle on uranium-nitride triple bonds. Uranium-nitride triple bonds had been prominent by their paucity over decades and were much sought after. David’s research generated the first example of a uranium-nitride triple bond which was published in the leading journal Science (Science, 2012, 337, 717), and it received widespread media coverage.

David was presented with his award on 25th April by Prof. Jeremy Roberts, Dean of the Graduate School. David said “I am delighted and honoured to receive this award and would like to thank our collaborators and the research group for invaluable inputs. I would also like to thank the selection panel for their kind remarks about the science and I am looking forward to seeing how this new area develops.”
