Nottingham Nanoscience & Nanotechnology Centre postdoctoral competition winners

NNNC-competition-figureDr. Graham Rance and Dr. Tom Chamberlain have been announced winners of the Nottingham Nanoscience & Nanotechnology Centre postdoctoral competition, 2013. Their joint proposal, titled “Exploring the complementarity of microscopy and spectroscopy for controlled transformations of carbon at the nanoscale”, was awarded £1000 worth of instrument time in the NNNC.

The project will investigate a conceptually new methodology based on a combination of advanced microscopic (TEM) and spectroscopic (Raman) techniques to simultaneously initiate and probe the selective transformation of molecules, incarcerated in the hollow channel of host single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) or supported on the atomically flat surface of graphene, into novel carbon-rich nanostructures. If successful, this methodology, underpinned by the synergistic interplay between complementary analytical techniques, could be universally suitable for the manipulation and assessment of a wide range of molecular nanomaterials.
