NCI holds events celebrating 15th UN Chinese Language Day

2/5/2024

The last two weeks of April saw a series of events organised by NCI in celebration of the 15th United Nations Chinese Language Day.

A Chinese fan painting workshop took place on 17 April at the Si Yuan Centre. Guided by professional artist Feng-Ru Lee, 16 UoN staff, students and local residents had a great time learning how to use Chinese brushes to paint on delicate silk fans.

On 22 April, 36 secondary school students from Rushcliffe School and Alderman White School visited NCI on Jubilee Campus. Following a fun but intensively competitive dragon puppet building competition, they had the opportunity to make and decorate Chinese palace lanterns to take home.

On 30 April, NCI invited a Chinese chef to guide 20 UoN students from Broadgate Park in making their first-ever spring rolls. All of the students managed to make a delicious meal’s worth of spring rolls within the hour long session, happily taking their work home with them for dinner!

Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. Both ResX, the University residential team and the two local schools thanked NCI for the enriching opportunities for their students, expressing interest in working with NCI on similar events again in the near future.

The UN Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20 to pay tribute to Cangjie, who claimed to be the inventor of Chinese characters.

UN language days were established in the year 2000, with Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish language days all celebrating multilingualism and cultural diversity. They also serve to promote the equal use of all six languages throughout the organisation.

NCI is proud to join these celebrations by offering students from local schools, University staff, students and local residents the opportunity to experience the richness of Chinese culture and Mandarin.
