Is your hall in the lead for Student Switch Off?

The first term results for Student Switch Off — an energy saving and recycling competition taking place at all University on-campus managed Halls — are now available on the Student Switch Off Nottingham webpages.

The halfway leaderboard has just been released showing Hugh Stewart Hall currently in 1st place, improving both their energy use and recycling rate compared to previous years.

The hall that comes out on top at the end of the year wins a massive delivery of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

You can get involved if you’re living on campus and win individual prizes including tubs of Ben & Jerry’s and NUS Extra cards for participating in quizzes, photo competitions and Hall events.

Visit the Nottingham Student Switch Off Facebook page to get involved.

I want to help my hall win; what can I do?

Everyone can do their bit for the environment, and a great place to start is by thinking about energy use. Halls of residence use huge amounts of electricity, so any energy you save will make a big difference. Here are some really easy things you can do today: switch off lights and appliances when not in use; separate your waste and recycle as much as you can; save water; put on an extra layer of clothing instead of turning up the heating; and don’t overfill the kettle when boiling water. There are loads of other things you can do – just think about all the electricity you use in one day and how you can make small changes!
