Automated speech recognition – captions on recorded teaching materials

Wednesday, 27 January 2021
The automatic speech recognition (ASR) feature of the Engage (Echo360) platform has been switched on as default. This means transcripts are automatically provided for newly recorded or uploaded videos.

We want to ensure speech recognition to produce captions is used to its full potential to make teaching materials as accessible as possible. However, the current quality of the ASR transcriptions in Engage, like those generated by other external services and software used by the University, can vary greatly.

Currently staff/tutors are not expected to edit the transcripts that are generated, and there are likely to be computer-generated errors contained within the transcripts. For this reason, students should not consider transcripts on their own to be a fully reliable source of academic content. You should always check the captions against other related teaching materials (slides, handouts, etc). If anything is unclear, or further guidance is required, you should consult with the relevant member of teaching staff.

If you need to rely on these captions due to a disability or other learning need, then contact our Disability Support Services Team for additional advice and support.

Instructions on how to access transcripts for Engage recordings can be found on the Engage Student Moodle page.
