COP26: Our research

Wednesday, 03 November 2021
As the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference kicks off, we take a look at the university’s role in tackling climate change. In this article we’re looking at our research activities.

The University of Nottingham has a longstanding commitment to tackling climate change. Biodiversity and sustainability are the cornerstones of our campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, while our world-leading research drives coordinated action on climate change:

Over the next two weeks we’ll be sharing our innovative research with the aspiration of informing debate at COP26, providing international policymakers with the science, data, expertise and insights to work together and establish new solutions.

Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange will lead the university’s delegation at COP26.

Dame Jessica said, “At no time in history has humankind been at a crossroads and knowingly faced a choice with such profound consequences for the lives of generations to come.

But thanks to science, and unparalleled abilities to assemble and interpret data and share this knowledge, we have never been better equipped to agree a way forward.”

Alongside COP26 our researchers will be sharing their knowledge on environmental issues with school children throughout November as part of Primary Parliament. They will be hosting events during the ESRC Festival of Social Science and exploring air quality with Nottingham and Notts Refugee Forum. Elsewhere we’re working with partners (including the city council, NTU, Ignite! and Backlit Studios) to host pop-up exhibition Green Light in the City, which is scheduled to open in early November.

In October the University of Nottingham Malaysia supported Malaysia Climate Action Week, contributing webinars on how businesses can contribute to the challenge, and on climate-smart agriculture. Meanwhile, research at University of Nottingham Ningbo China is tackling air pollution and smart eco-city partnerships.
