Help us slash our carbon emissions

Monday, 06 February 2023
Living in campus halls? We’re challenging you to reduce your energy consumption in this year’s Switch Off competition – the hall that saves the most wins!

The university is aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 63% by 2030. Gas and electric usage on our UK campuses produces around 40,000 tonnes of Co2 a year – it's essential we reduce tis and to do that we need everyone’s help.

All catered halls on campus, as well as Melton Hall, are eligible for this year’s go! Switch Off competition. It will run from Wednesday 1 February to Saturday 25 March and will see halls compete to see which one can save the most energy.

Last Year

Last year’s competition, which ran for four weeks, saved 42,000 kWh of energy compared to usage in 2021. This is around 14 tonnes of CO2 - equivalent to two return flights to Sydney! The competition was won by Sherwood Hall who saved 9,000 kWh.

For a healthier planet it’s essential that we all change our unsustainable behaviours, and getting into good habits now will save you money in the future when you move into private accommodation.

You can use our energy dashboard to see how you’re doing compared to other halls and whether you’re using more or less energy compared to last year.

To help you win this year’s go! Switch Off competition, remember to:

  1. Switch off all unnecessary electronics and lights
  2. Layer up instead of turning the heating up
  3. Shower for less time – try four minutes
  4. Air dry your clothes when the weather starts to get warmer
