Police registration is no longer required for international students

Tuesday, 23 August 2022
The Home Office have repealed the requirement to register with the police with immediate effect. This applies to all new and returning students.

Prior to August 2022, student visa holders of certain nationalities, who were coming to the UK for more than six months were required to register their attendance with the police. This requirement no longer applies.

Moving forward, if there are any changes to your address or personal details, you should report these to the Home Office – not the police. You will no longer be required to produce a police registration certificate on arrival at a UK border.

More information can be found below.

New students

If you’re new to Nottingham this year, you may have previously been informed that you need to register with the police on arrival. This may be stated on your entry clearance vignette (visa sticker) and/or your visa decision letter. This no longer applies, and you can ignore this requirement. If you already have an appointment booked it will be cancelled.

If you have already entered the UK and obtained a police registration certificate, you do not need to keep this updated or inform the police of any changes to your circumstances.

Returning students

If you have previously registered with the police and obtained a police registration certificate, you will have been told to inform the police of any changes to your address, visa or passport, and told to keep your certificate up to date. You no longer need to do this.
