Postgraduate researcher bringing Chinese cinema to Europe

Monday, 23 May 2022
Current Film and Television Studies postgraduate researcher Liao Zhang is leading the public relations team for the biggest Chinese film festival in Europe in 2022.

Odyssey: a Chinese Cinema Season aims to empower a shared appreciation of film to create an inclusive cinematic experience and to encourage cross-cultural understanding. It not only introduces young Chinese film talents to the UK audience, but also provides forums for professionals to exchange creativity and business ideas.

Liao oversees the media campaign and Odyssey has now been covered by many well-known international media outlets including AnOther Magazine, Cinema Scope, Asian Film Festivals, Windows on Worlds, Upcoming on Screen, Asian Movie Pulse, China Daily and Nouvelles d'Europe. All online screenings, panel discussions and Q&A’s can be found on the Odyssey website.

Liao has also acted as convenor for one of the festival’s industry-focussed discussion panels - Women’s Practice in Contemporary Chinese Film Industry: Female Film Programmer on the Rise. This panel brings together four female film programmers to reflect on what changes their presence has brought about in this traditionally male-dominated film festival industry, as well as the challenges and dilemmas they encounter in their practice.
