Suffering with a case of the common cold?

Wednesday, 13 October 2021
The start of the new academic year is often accompanied by the spread of viruses such as coughs and colds. Make sure you have all the information you need to stay healthy.

The common cold has similar symptoms (see below) to Covid-19 but most of the time you can treat it yourself.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • a blocked or runny nose
  • a sore throat
  • headaches and muscle aches
  • coughs
  • sneezing
  • a raised temperature
  • loss of taste or smell

If you’re suffering with a cold, the NHS website recommends:

  • rest and sleep
  • keeping warm
  • drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration
  • gargling salt water to soothe a sore throat

You can also buy cough and cold medicines from a pharmacist or supermarket to ease aches, lower your temperature and relieve a blocked nose.

The symptoms of a cough or cold are very similar to those of Covid-19. If your symptoms include Covid symptoms we recommend taking a PCR test. If you are not feeling well, please refrain from coming on to campus.

Most cases of the common cold can be treated without seeing a doctor, but if you experience extreme, persistent symptoms, please seek medical advice. Make sure you’re registered with a doctor here in Nottingham.

The Education Hub has further advice about looking after yourself at university.
