Simon joined the University of Nottingham in the summer of 2000. In September 2017, he became Head of the School of Economics at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. His research interests lie primarily in the areas of poverty, labour markets, health and education, with application to China and sub-Saharan Africa. He is a research associate of the Institute of Labour Economics, IZA, and has served as a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of African Economies, the Journal of Development Studies and African Development Review. He has published in a range of journals including Economic Development and Cultural Change, the Journal of African Economies, the Journal of International Development, the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics and World Development.
