An opportunity exists to undertake a PhD which is being jointly funded by the School of Pharmacy and the School of Education at the University of Nottingham as part of our DFID SPHEIR (Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education Innovation and Reform) project on transforming Pharmacy and Chemistry education in Kenya.
The SPHEIR project “Transformation of Pharmacy and Chemistry Degree Provision” will work with Kenyan academics to engage employers and alumni from the healthcare, chemical and pharmaceutical industries to reinvigorate chemistry and pharmacy higher education courses and better link learning outcomes with population needs. The partnership aims to:
- create a globally competitive and adaptive chemistry and pharmacy workforce to meet the requirements of a rapidly industrialising Kenyan economy
- enhance collaboration between industry and education with an emphasis on chemistry and pharmacy courses
- link learning outcomes and wider impact at the individual, institutional, systemic and national levels
- develop diagnostic models and benchmarking tools for developing academic capacity in pharmacy and chemistry
We will achieve this by:
- developing a new needs-based pharmacy and chemistry curricula in Kenya that will address shortages of specific skills in the pharmacy and chemistry workforces
- providing public and private sector work placements that will increase skills and employability of graduates
- increasing the capability of academic staff, and working towards demonstrably better outcomes for women and people from underserved communities
Transformation of Pharmacy and Chemistry degree provision will develop a new set of institutional policies and practices that will deliver innovation and transformed professional education within Kenyan universities.
We are seeking a student who can work on one or more of the project’s elements.
The successful student will have a standard stipend of £14,553 pa per year. Please note that this is a full-time PhD for a UK/EU student. The project will include fieldwork in Kenya, with the extent of this to be finalised once the successful candidate has developed a detailed proposal with the project team.
The PhD starts in autumn 2018, and will be supervised by Professor Claire Anderson, and Professor Simon McGrath
