Biography

Deniz joined the University of Nottingham as an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Management in September 2023. Before joining the University of Nottingham, she had worked in various academic and administrative capacities as a faculty member, researcher, and the Chair of Educational Administration Division at Baskent University in Turkey for over 25 years. Her research and teaching focuses on epistemology and theories of educational administration, educational policy, social justice leadership, refugee education, culturally relevant school leadership, educational leadership within challenging school settings, higher education and privatization of education. She led various national and international funded research projects in Turkey and the UK. She acts as an assistant editor in International Journal of Leadership on Education and undertakes various roles in the advisory boards of peer-reviewed journals such as JEA and REAL. She holds an appointment of a Co-convenor in Network 26 (Educational Leadership) of European Educational Research Association (EERA). Previously in Turkey, she contributed to numerous teacher and school leader training programs of the Ministry of National Education in addition to providing consultancy to local schools.

Deniz taught a vast variety of courses and modules across different teacher and school leader preparation programs at BA, MA and PhD levels. She currently teaches a variety of Educational Leadership modules at MA level. She is also the Module Leader for Leading Learning in the MA in Educational Leadership Course. She has a long history of curriculum design in higher education contexts.

Current Research

Deniz's research focuses mainly on diversity, equity, and inclusion in K-12 from an educational leadership and policy perspective, the epistemology of educational leadership and management as a field, social justice and culturally relevant school leadership for educational change and school leaders' policy mediation practices at school level, educational policy and leadership in refugee education settings. Moreover, she is concerned with critical comparative research dealing with educational sociology, policy and leadership.
