Biography

Dr Francesca Salvi joined the University of Nottingham in September 2023 as an Assistant Professor in Education. She teaches on MA and BA Education courses and is available for doctoral supervision. Previously, Francesca was a Senior Lecturer in Childhood Studies at the University of Portsmouth, where she led the MRes Humanities and Social Sciences. Francesca holds a PhD (International Education) from the University of Sussex and an MPhil (Development Studies) from the University of Oxford.

Expertise Summary

Francesca is an interdisciplinary social scientist. Her work focuses on transitions between childhood and adulthood in sub-Saharan Africa and South-east Asia. In sub-Saharan Africa, she considered how global discourses of teenage pregnancy and parenthood are constructed in opposition to education and employment imperatives. Through collaboration with Indonesian colleagues, she is interested in how different geo-cultural settings can develop approaches to Environmental Education that are place-based and child-led. Her aim in doing so is to pursue quality education that contributes to creating sustainable lifestyles.

Research Summary

Francesca is currently working on the following projects:

2023-25: British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants Scheme [SRG2223\230010] 10k to carry out a study to understand how young men in South Africa embrace fatherhood through the support of their own mothers (Principal Investigator)

2023-24: British Council Going Global Partnership 'Environmental Capacity Building for ECEC Preservice Teachers in Indonesia and the UK' 30k to carry out an intervention to enhance pre-service teachers' skills around pedagogies for sustainability in the UK and Indonesia (Principal Investigator)

Francesca welcomes enquiries about doctoral supervision in the following areas:

Children and young people in the Global South; transitions to adulthood; pregnancy and parenthood and their intersections with education and work; gender; identity; agency; sexual and reproductive health; global and glocal citizenship; sustainability and climate change, children's agency and participation.

Past Research

2018-19: Newton Mobility Fund [NMG2R2\100077] 10K to carry out a pilot study on young fatherhood and masculinity in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (Co-Investigator)

2010-14: Economic and Social Research Council (ESRCS) full studentship [grant number ES/H015086/1] to complete doctoral work on in-school pregnancy policy in Mozambique.
