Biography

Dr. Xiaolong Chen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering (M3) at the University of Nottingham. He is affiliated with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Group, and work with Centre for Additive Manufacturing as an associate member at the University of Nottingham.

He has editorial roles with Nano Materials Science (Youth Editor 2023 - 2025), Journal of Material Research (Guest Editor for a Special Focus Issue on 3D printing electrodes for energy storage), and International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (Reviewing Committee).

His professional endeavours are directed towards Sustainable Engineering, with a concentrated emphasis on the intersection between sustainable additive manufacturing processes and an array of engineering applications. These applications include but are not limited to electrochemical devices (e.g., supercapacitors) and solar energy harvesting (e.g., semi-artificial photosynthesis). Within the M3 Department, he is a co-convenor of the year 3 course module of Engineering Sustainability (MMME3066 UNUK).

Prior to his current role, he was a Post-doctoral Research Associate at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge from Sept 2018 to Feb 2023. His research contributions were focused on developing efficient semi-artificial photosynthesis systems utilizing state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques (e.g., Aerosol Jet Spraying/Printing, Inkjet Printing, and Micro/Nano Templating). His educational background includes a PhD from Imperial College London, awarded in 2018 for his work on developing a cost-effective, desktop, electrochemical metal additive manufacturing system. He obtained a Master's degree with Honours in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Systems Management from the University of Manchester in 2014.

Future Research

The primary objective of his research activities involves developing next-generation additive manufacturing processes, which will promote the sustainable use of materials and reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing. He also plans to expand his research to investigate how to produce multiple materials and multifunctional structures through smart digital manufacturing processes for a wide range of sustainable applications. These applications include but not limited to fabrication and evaluation of energy harvesting and storage devices.

With this rich tapestry of experience and a perpetual drive to innovate, Dr Xiaolong Chen looks forward to potential academic collaborations and inviting enthusiastic students who are ready to explore the frontiers of sustainable engineering.
