Biography

Hengan Ou is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Group.

Expertise Summary

I obtained BEng and MSc degrees from Chongqing University, China, and PhD from the University of Strathclyde. I had worked as an academic at Queen's University Belfast and Chongqing University before I joined the Department in 2008. I have more than 20 years' research experience working in areas of material forming processing technologies, process modelling and optimisation, structural design and machine system integration. As the Principal Investigator, I have managed 14 research projects sponsored by UK research councils such as EPSRC and government, EC/FP6/7 and industrial companies. Currently I lead two EPSRC research projects in developing new incremental and flexible forming processes and integrated software and hardware systems for personalised manufacturing of medical implants and customised manufacturing of high value products. I also coordinate and manage an EC FP7 Marie Curie IRSES project in developing new material processing technologies for a sustainable future involving 10 EU and international institutions. I have published more than 130 journal and conference papers and have been an EPSRC Peer College member since 2006.

Current Research

As part of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Group, Dr Hengan Ou leads the Research Team in Metal Forming and Materials Processing currently carrying out applied and fundamental research in the following areas.

  1. New flexible and hybrid material forming & processing technologies:
  • Incremental sheet forming processes
  • Friction stir welding and processing of lightweight materials
  • Strain induced microstructural refinement of metallic materials
  1. Process modelling & optimisation techniques:
  • Precision forging optimisation and preform design for net-shape manufacturing of aeroengine components
  • Multi-scale based computational methods for "through process" modelling, microstructural evaluation and performance optimisation
  1. Development of integrated software & hardware systems
  1. Fundamental study of mechanical behaviour of metallic and non-metallic materials:
  • Mechanical testing, constitutive models, formability and damage of materials under large deformation
  • Hot forming of high temperature alloys
  • Tribological effect of materials under forming conditions
  • Finite element method of contact problems
