On June 11th and 12th, the National Theatre of Scotland will perform Rona Munro’s celebrated trilogy The James Plays at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham. To celebrate this event, on Friday June 10th the School of English is hosting an afternoon of conversations about the staging of Scottish history. Bringing together theatre practitioners and administrators, theatre and literature scholars, Scottish historians and members of the James Plays company, the James Plays Debates aim to unpack the unique achievement of the trilogy amid the broader questions about performing Scotland’s history.

The first session includes speakers who have written extensively on Scottish theatre, history and politics, and will consider the history and context in which Munro’s plays are intervening. The second session includes theatre-makers who have worked on major recent productions of Scottish history plays (Dunsinane, The James Plays, The Satire of the Three Estates), and will consider the purpose and politics of staging Scottish history.

The day will finish by moving to the Theatre Royal, where Rona Munro will discuss her work ahead of the theatre’s staging of the trilogy.
