Research Topic

Pupil and teacher motivation and attitudes towards MFL learning: Investigating stereotypes and gendered language.

Research Summary

My research is an exploration of motivations for and attitudes towards MFL learning at primary and secondary level. While uptake numbers at GCSE and A level continue to drop, narratives of language learning experiences can be useful in uncovering reasons for this, and have been largely neglected in recent years. A particular focus is placed on investigating gendered language within these narratives, in order to establish whether the stereotype of 'girls are better at languages than boys' exists. Collecting and exploring narrative structures from primary through to secondary level hopes to reveal how this stereotype develops, and whether there is a link between patterns present in language, and exam results and uptake numbers.
