Teaching Opportunities

Teaching Opportunities for Postgraduate Research Students

The School of English offers opportunities for some of our Research Students to teach at undergraduate level. Research students normally apply to be a Teaching Affiliate from their second year of PhD registration onwards.

Research Students who wish to teach are selected for teaching through a process of presentation and interview in the School.  Selection is subject to the agreement of the Research Students' Supervisors.

Support and Training

Research Students who teach are supported through all aspects of module teaching by staff already convening and teaching on the module and by a training programme run by the University’s Professional Development Unit.  New Teaching Affiliates must attend the following training courses provided by Professional Development:

  • A Practical Look at Core Teaching Skills
  • Marking and Assessment

A system of peer observation within the School provides the opportunity for ongoing feedback and discussion of teaching.

A member of academic staff is appointed as the Teaching Affiliate
Co-ordinator in the School and will hold a meeting at the beginning of the academic year to discuss any concerns and questions.
