The Co-ordinator's role in maintaining project focus.

Elaine Arici:
It needed somebody to keep the momentum going. And I emerged with that role, so I was the one that was talking to people. People saw me in the corridor, and they’d say, “Ah, ePioneers project. I must be doing something on there.”

Do Coyle:
It involved a certain amount of sensitivity, because if people really felt that it was the top-down, “You must do...” then that would have changed the ethos of the group.

On the other hand, without somebody gently reminding us that a report needs to be done, we’re halfway through, how about meeting, and don’t forget to check, and all those kind of reminders then, that’s where it came from, and it was crucial.

Rolf Wiesemes:
I was probably one of the people who had to be shepherded quite a few times, in terms of sending in reports, and giving updates.

I think Elaine’s role, in terms of being supportive, but then, at the same time saying, “You’ve got these deadlines coming. Please remember to do this,” was very important, because it also forced me then to think, “Okay, what - how can I handle these difficulties?” and “do I want to handle these difficulties, or do I need to shift?” Which, in the end, I chose to do.

Richard Pemberton:
There were deadlines that she set, or which were “Have you posted to the blog site?” “You’ve got to report on your progress.” “We’re having a, sort of, a ‘show and tell’”. “We’re having a conference”, so that these would come out fairly regularly, these emails.

And that was useful as well, so it - I think that would help us think about how we’re evaluating the project.

Tony Fisher:
Well Elaine took on the bulk of the co-ordination, and I think we were very lucky that she did do that so vigorously, actually, because I think that was important in keeping the project both moving forward and together as a project, because otherwise it could, very easily, have become just the subprojects.
