Description

On Wednesday, 29th of November from 16:00 - 18:00 (GMT), the Human Rights Law Centre hosting the folowing event: From Human Rights to Digital Rights? Discussing the EU Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles. This event will take place in the Monica Partridge Building (Room E07) and online via MS Teams.

In an era of increased digitalisation, many questions are being asked of how we conceptualise and exercise our human rights within digital spaces; from freedom of expression, to the ways in which we access, share, and protect our data. Calls for new and effective regulatory frameworks have become increasingly commonplace. In December 2022, the European Union introduced its Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles, thereby reiterating its commitment to a safe, secure, and sustainable digital transformation. Nearly a year after its introduction, we are creating an opportunity to discuss the impact of this seminal document as well as the current status of digital human rights.

To discuss these important issues, we will be joined by an expert panel of speakers, including:

  • Jeanne Mifsud-Bonnici (Professor in European Technology & Human Rights, University of Groningen);
  • Alexandra Giannopoulou (Research Fellow, Institute for Information Law, University of Amsterdam);
  • Jeff Kenner (Professor of European Law, University of Nottingham); and
  • Nicholas Gervassis (Assistant Professor in Law (Technology and Data), University of Nottingham).

The event will be chaired by Mando Rachovitsa (Associate Professor in Human Rights Law and Deputy Director of the HRLC).

All welcome.
