Description

The Human Rights Film Series presents The First Grader.  This touching film is based on the true story of Kimani Maruge, a Mau Mau veteran in his eighties who enrolled in elementary education after the Kenyan government announced universal and free elementary education in 2003.

The story explores the transforming force of education, but also highlights a number of challenges many countries face in implementing the right to education and guaranteeing free primary education to all and achieving Millennium Development Goal 2: Universal Primary Education. In his determination to learn, Maruge also raised an important question: how far should the goal of “universal primary education” extend? Finally, the film touches on the colonial history of Kenya, more particularly the Mau Mau Revolt that took place between 1952 and 1960.
