Addressing Forced Marriage in the EU

In October 2014, the FRA published a report Addressing forced marriage in the EU: legal provisions and promising practices.

The report calls for comprehensive action to tackle forced marriage and considers the current legal provisions in five EU Member States: France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The report also identifies promising practices which can be implemented to support victims of forced marriage.

HRLC contributed to the comparative analysis of the report by providing data related to the UK’s current legal framework which criminalises forced marriage. In addition , promising practices were identified that aim to support victims, and potential victims, including the provision of support services, awareness raising and educational initiatives, training and campaigns that also tackle prevention.
