Human Rights and Imprisonment: HRLC Welcomes Fellows from the African Prisons Project

The week HRLC was pleased to welcome four Fellows from the African Prisons Project to the University of Nottingham for a three day programme on Human Rights and Imprisonment.  Beverline Lungatso, Antony Asige Mugomati, Dennis Kipruto Mungo and Jacob Mbogo Gachuchi are in the UK for six weeks to complete a Professional Fellowship award funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.

HRLC's programme is the only academic component of the programme and provides an overview of aspects of international human rights law and regimes related to imprisonment including:

  • Prison health and healthcare
  • Prisons and the institutionalisation debate
  • Prisoners and the right to vote
  • Treatment for mental disorder in detention
  • Life imprisonment as a human rights issue
  • Human rights as organisational risk in the UK prison sector

Whilst in Nottingham the Fellows will attend sessions led by Professor Dominic McGoldrick, Professor Dirk van Zyl Smit, Ms Sangeeta Shah, Dr Melanie Jordan,Dr Nell Munro, Mrs Georgie Benford and Professor Noel Whitty.
