Liberty Director, Martha Spurrier to deliver HRLC's 2017 Annual Lecture

Martha Spurrier

We are pleased to announce that on Thursday 9 February 2017, Martha Spurrier, Director of Liberty, will deliver HRLC’s 2017 Annual Lecture entitled, Who are we? Hate, hostility and human rights in a post-Brexit world.

On 23 June 2016 the UK's electorate voted in favour of leaving the European Union, marking what will likely be the most significant constitutional change in recent British legal history. In the wake of the historic referendum much remains uncertain, in particular with regard to domestic human rights protections. In her lecture Ms Spurrier will discuss pertinent issues in a post-Brexit world.

Martha joined Liberty as Director in May 2016. She arrived from Doughty Street Chambers, where she specialised in defending access to justice and the rights of women, children and disabled people. She acted for bereaved families seeking answers after loved ones died in state care, represented victims of rape, domestic violence and trafficking who were failed by the police, brought claims on behalf of prisoners and immigration detainees who had been mistreated in custody and challenged attempts to curb press freedom, privacy and protest rights.

In 2015 Martha co-founded the 'Act for the Act' campaign, which put posters on trains, buses and billboards across the country telling the stories of men, women and children who had used the Human Rights Act when things went wrong in their lives.

Martha was previously a lawyer at the mental health charity, Mind, and at the Public Law Project.

The Lecture will start at 5pm on Thursday 9 February 2017 and will be in room A01, Highfield House. To attend please RSVP to hrlc@nottingham.ac.uk by Tuesday 7 February 2017.
