Dr Sara Arapiles Speaks at European Parliament Roundtable

Sara-Arapiles-Parliament

HRLC member, Dr Sara Arapiles participated in a Roundtable on Eritrea hosted by MEP Katrin Langensiepen at the European Parliament (Brussels, Belgium) on 25 October, alongside the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Eritrea, among other speakers. The Roundtable discusses the situation in Eritrea and its footprints in the region and in Europe.

Dr Arapiles’s intervention focused on slavery in Eritrea. She explained and further problematised how reports of government entities and international and non-governmental organisations as well as jurisprudence of asylum courts in Europe either make negative findings about slavery in the Eritrea’s Military/National Service Programme based on incorrect interpretations of international law, or do not make any attempt to inquire about slavery leading, in some cases, to international protection for Eritreans being unduly denied.
