Ensuring justice for hate crime victims: professional perspectives

Today the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) published guidance on combating hate crime.

The guidance draws on practices from across the EU on how to combat hate crime as well as interviews with experts from law enforcement, criminal justice, and civil society organisations. As the UK Contractor HRLC conducted research and provided information on the UK approach to combating hate crime.

It was uncovered that whilst the UK government funds around 13 NGOs specialising in prevention and 19 victim support organisations, the relatively low level of financial support given has resulted in a fragmentation of coverage across the country. The UK was also found to be one of a number of EU Member States where the police do not have specific procedures for referring victims of hate crime to support services separate from? procedures for all crimes.

Alongside the guidance, the FRA has also produced an explanatory video of how it can be used.
