At present I am on research leave (Summer 2020-Summer 2023) and am only teaching at PhD level. I am keen to supervise PhD projects in central Mediterranean prehistory (particularly Italian prehistory), early mining and metallurgy, the early Neolithic, British Prehistory and the History and Theory of Archaeology.

Current Research

My research is largely focused on the western Mediterranean, in particular Italy, and I am interested in early mining and metallurgy, the spread of the Neolithic, Bayesian modelling of radiocarbon dates, dairying and the pastoral economy, as well as Bronze Age and Iron Age northern Italy and the History and Theory of Archaeology.

At present (2020-2023) I am working on a book project, 'Invention and Innovation - the origins of metallurgy in the Mediterranean basin', funded in 2021-2023 by a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship.

Long-term projects include the final publication of excavation in collaboration with Roberto Maggi (formerly of the Direzione Regionale per i Beni culturali e paesaggistici della Liguria) of the prehistoric copper mine at Monte Loreto, Liguria

I am keen to supervise PhD projects in central Mediterranean prehistory (particularly Italian prehistory), early mining and metallurgy, British Prehistory and the History and Theory of Archaeology.

Past Research

Mark Pearce 2013. Rethinking the north Italian early Neolithic. London: Accordia Research Institute (Specialist Studies on Italy 17) - funded by a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship, the monograph reassesses the early Neolithic of northern Italy, proposing a new and more precise radiocarbon chronology for understanding its inception on the basis of the large available corpus of radiocarbon determinations, by bringing to bear Bayesian statistic modelling, particularly on those series of determinations from deeply stratified cave sites. The study also examines the mechanisms by which the Neolithic spread and argues that a 'full' Neolithic appears at the beginning of the period in Italy.

Understanding Italian prehistoric metallurgy: production, distribution and consumption - an AHRC research-leave-supported book project - Mark Pearce 2007. Bright Blades and Red Metal: essays on north Italian prehistoric metalwork. London: Accordia Research Institute (Specialist Studies on Italy 14).

Excavation in collaboration with Roberto Maggi (Direzione Regionale per i Beni culturali e paesaggistici della Liguria) of the early prehistoric copper mine at Monte Loreto, Liguria (sponsors include AHRB Research Grant 1999-2002) - R. Maggi and M. Pearce, 2005. Mid fourth-millennium copper mining in Liguria, north-west Italy: the earliest known copper mines in Western Europe. Antiquity 79 (303): 66-77.

Survey in collaboration with Michael McCullagh (School of Geography) at the later fourth millennium cal BC copper mine at Libiola, Liguria.
