Biography

I came to Nottingham in January 2021. I did my undergraduate degree at Heythrop College London (2005--8), followed by an MPhil at UCl (2008--2010) and a PhD at the University of Warwick (2012--2016), all in Philosophy. Prior to coming to Nottingham I held a number of teaching posts at Oxford, mainly associated with Jesus College.

I grew up in Nottingham. I'm very happy to answer questions from prospective students about what it's like to live and work in the city.

Expertise Summary

I am mainly interested in how contemporary innovations in the philosophy of mind can help us shed light on and solve difficulties in our ethical thinking. More specifically, I'm interested in how various externalist theses in the philosophy of mind might help us solve problems and shed light on phenomena like responding to reasons, normative achievement, rationality, authenticity, moral responsibility, agential control, and the moral emotions.

You can find some detailed research proposals which develop these themes on my personal website, the link to which is above.

Teaching Summary

I offer undergraduate teaching primarily in, but not restricted to, Normative Ethics, Metaethics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Action, Freewill, Kant, and Existentialism. You'll… read more

I offer undergraduate teaching primarily in, but not restricted to, Normative Ethics, Metaethics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Action, Freewill, Kant, and Existentialism. You'll often find me teaching my own advanced UG module: PHIL3034: Authenticity & Existentialism.

I'd very much welcome graduate students who'd like to work on issues in the theory of reasons, rationality, freewill, moral psychology, and responsibility.
