Releasing our potential

All industries need to attract and retain talent. A key aspect of this is a commitment to continuing professional development – targeted training for staff at all levels.

The University’s Brewing Science team has developed a portfolio of short courses and postgraduate-level qualifications in brewing and allied fields, which are equipping the next generation of brewing industry professionals with the technical skills and knowledge necessary to innovate and problem-solve across a multidisciplinary process.

The part-time courses are designed to fit around work commitments and are delivered through a mixture of e-learning materials (75%) and intensive residential courses (25%) at our Sutton Bonington campus.

Courses in practical brewing have also been established to give those new to the industry new skill sets.

This ‘blended learning’ approach offers real flexibility for targeted professional development while maintaining face-to-face group teaching and the learning which comes from shared experience and practice. Innovative e-learning materials are regularly updated and make use of interactive content, video and e-lectures. Some courses are held in the Brewing Research and Innovation Centre, allowing students to acquire practical skills in its brewery.

Feedback from our students and their employers has been overwhelmingly positive since the first cohort graduated in 2009. Students enjoyed the opportunities to meet experts in brewing-related disciplines and to discuss issues of practice with their peers.

Nottingham’s MSc in Brewing Science graduates are equipped with the skills that will enable them to become key players in the next generation of technical experts, helping shape the future of the brewing industry in the 21st century.
