In 2011, we launched Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, our biggest ever fundraising campaign. After six incredible years of support from our alumni, staff and friends, we are proud to report the official closing of this extraordinary campaign in September 2017.
We offer a huge thank you to all our 18,500 donors who helped raise a phenomenal £242m, exceeding both our original £150 million and extended £200 million targets. We are also extremely grateful to our 1,678 volunteers who have so generously shared their time, skills and expertise with our University community.
Put simply, thank you.
Generous support like yours has progressed life-changing research to help children with brain tumours, discovered new insights into dementia and breast cancer, and given thousands of bright students from all backgrounds the chance to achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Your support is changing lives
Your support makes the incredible happen, every day. Here are a few of our highlights:
- 3,228 talented students from all backgrounds said ‘YES’ to their University place - thanks to donations to our scholarship programme.
- 13,298 students have boosted their skills and employability by getting involved in volunteer community projects in the UK and around the world – thanks to donations to our Cascade fund.
- Over 1,000 students have discovered new career paths, insights and opportunities, by spending time with our inspirational volunteers and mentors.
- Over 21,500 students are now participating in our sport and physical activity programmes, thanks to a transformational gift from Law alumnus David Ross, whose generosity supported our impressive new sports village at University Park.
- Pupils at 160 schools in the East Midlands, living in areas under-represented within higher education, have participated in educational activities to raise aspirations and help them prepare for university.
- Our reach extends far beyond the UK, with student scholarships and support programmes helping hundreds of bright students to excel at our campuses in China and Malaysia.
- Experts at our Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre are giving hope to thousands by advancing cutting-edge research into the disease. Today, 7 out of 10 children survive a brain tumour – more than ever before.
- Pilot results for our blood test to detect breast cancer early are looking very positive – with this innovative technology set to progress to the next stage.
- 95% of the genes linked to dementia were discovered by our researchers – with research teams looking at all elements of the disease from diagnosis and treatment to improving patient care.
- Over 50 talented new Research Fellows and PhD students are now working at Nottingham – plus 7 new Chairs, including a Chair of Jewish Studies.
- Our award-winning campuses have been transformed with new state-of-the-art facilities, including the innovative SABMiller Brewing Facility at Sutton Bonington and the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at Jubilee Campus.
- More than 4,000 students in the UK, Malaysia and China have taken modules at the Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Enterprise, fostering entrepreneurial thinking and creating career pathways. The Ingenuity Lab within the institute currently supports more than 2,500 members and 162 active businesses.
- The heart of University Park - our iconic Portland Building - is under-going a dramatic transformation to give this much-loved building a new lease of life as a 21st century hub for student life.
- Work has started on a new Cripps Health Centre – bringing advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities to students, staff and the local community, thanks to the generous support of the Cripps Foundation.

Ahead of his retirement, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Greenaway said:
“Together, we have achieved an astonishing amount in a relatively short space of time. The swift smashing of our original campaign target was amazing and it has been a privilege to witness the generosity being shown to our University community from so many– a wonderful sign of both the great affection and high regard in which Nottingham is held in our hearts and minds.
“Gifts large and small – from donations through our student calling programme, fundraising appeals and through Wills and legacies, to the priceless hours given by our volunteers, community fundraisers and Nottingham Life Cycle participants – have fuelled our ability to positively change the lives of people in Nottingham and around the world. The belief and backing of our partners – charitable trusts and foundations, corporates and organisations – has given us the strength and support we needed to go further, faster.”
“The University will need to be bolder still in the coming years. As we seek to maintain this extraordinary progress and tackle the great global challenges of our time, we will need friends by our side, people who share our vision and dream the same dreams, just as you and I have over the last few years. For now, I am happy to reflect on a great job well done, knowing that so much was only possible thanks to your loyalty, commitment and generosity. On behalf of all our staff, researchers and current students, plus the thousands yet to come, I offer my deepest thanks and gratitude.”
While our Impact Campaign is coming to an end, our work is far from done. We will build on these strong foundations, ensuring that our University always remains a place where merit – not background – defines who becomes a Nottingham student, and where world-class research continues to tackle the global challenges faced by generations today and in the future.
