Cascade project wins national award

Thanks to your support for Cascade, a team of Nottingham students have won Enactus UK’s National Competition, securing them a place in the Enactus World Cup in Toronto, later this month.

Enactus UK is part of an international non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through social action.

The Enactus Nottingham team selected Re-covered and Aquor, two of their 19 projects, to present at the competition. Addressing 1,500 people at the event in London, 50 of which were business CEOs and directors, delegates heard first-hand the positive impact that these Cascade funded projects are having on people in Nottingham and Cameroon.

Andy Stride, President of Enactus Nottingham and third-year management student, said: "All the projects we run in Enactus have to be sustainable and have an impact on the community. For the presentation we choose issues that were relatable – people can understand the need for clean water and projects like Re-covered show that people need help in Nottingham too. I think that’s what the judges liked."

Re-covered transforms unwanted furniture and offers work experience and paid jobs to disadvantaged adults who are struggling to find work in Nottingham.

Enactus Nottingham student in Cameroon1Aquor provides families in a rural Cameroon town access to clean and safe drinking water. Bio Sand Filters, which act as an in-house filtration system filled with layers of specially selected sand and gravel, purify contaminated water by removing harmful organisms responsible for the spread of water borne diseases.

The team has adapted the traditional concrete filter and developed a plastic version that can be easily and cheaply made out of waste plastic containers and PVC pipes. This cheap alternative will allow each household to afford a filter and have access to a source of clean water, significantly improving their quality of lives.

So far this project has provided 22,000 people with clean water and also employs two local employees.

Support Enactus Nottingham

Enactus Nottingham is run by students from The University of Nottingham, who believe in harnessing the power of business to create sustainable and scalable change to those in need across the world. Cascade supports projects which enhance the skills, confidence, social awareness and employability of students, while making a significant impact on communities, both locally and globally. This is the wider reach and added skills that Cascade grants offer to students, and as a result, also greatly benefit local and international communities.

The Cascade fund is made possible thanks to the kind donations from alumni and friends of the University who want to help students achieve something special during their time at Nottingham.
